Homemade Christmas

Jiminy Crickets! Has it really been since BEFORE HALLOWEEN that either of us posted?!? Where did November go? Christmas is almost upon us! I will have to post double time to make up for lost time...

A few years ago my mom came up with the idea for Homemade Christmas, which is that at least one Christmas gift must be homemade, and if recycling is involved, even better. We all felt that the mass produced/commercial-ness of Christmas had gotten to be a bit much (although we still buy most presents anyway), we had to put some time and effort into at least one gift. It's been easy with the kids, we try to do a homemade ornament every year. Last year I scrap booked Rachael a Joy Christmas picture and made Mom a teacup pincushion. Here are some of the ideas I have knocking around in my head.

First up, this year's kid ornament from The Adventures of J-Man and MillerBug:
Only I am thinking of using my thumb as the bottom, M's as the middle, and Miss L as the top of the snowman.

For gifts, I am just really digging these penny-letters from The Crafted Sparrow:

Another idea is an M craft we did for Cub Scouts that's also featured here at Moms by Heart.net:
And finally, in digging through my crafty-mess, I found a certain incomplete project similar to this I did for Ray-Ray a couple years ago....
Well, that's it for tonight, shall post again tomorrow!

Frank, My New Best Friend

Since we did so much for Michael's Birthday, we had to do something special for Miss L's Halloween party. I signed up for games, and promptly did nothing until Sunday, when I realized I still hadn't done a thing yet. An internet search for Monster games came up with Monster Toss, courtesy of Lil' Luna. It's not overtly Halloween, she made her's for a birthday party, but I figured this way we could use it again for other parties. What's scary is all I had to buy was the wood and beans, I had the paint and fabric already.
Not bad for $8 bucks.
This is Frank. Miss L is in love with Frank, she even let him sleep in her room last night. Not only is he a bean bag toss game, he is also a photo op.

Here are just 2 of the cuties from the party, Miss L and Miss C. The kids had a blast!

Minecraft

Michael is obsessed with a video game Minecraft. Heard of it? No? Then you haven't been within a 5 mile radius of a 10 year old boy lately. Think Legos on an epic scale, everything is square.

This is the Halloween costume I made for Michael, it's a Creeper, a Minecraft bad guy. We had a school Fall Fun Night a couple weeks ago.
I got the idea from Wonder How To: Halloween Ideas, they posted a variety of paper configurations to glue onto the boxes I snagged from recycle. Michael and his friends loved it!

Next up was Michael's Birthday party, and the fabulous invite I found at Flufflepot. Not only was the invite super awesome, her blog about her and her own son's fascination with Minecraft is flippin' hilarious.
To complete the Minecraft shenanigans, I had a Minecraft cake made to order (I am not that good of a cake decorator) from Kleaver Kreations.
This is what a cake looks like in the game, and the box to the left was the party favors filled with Minecraft related items. All in all we had an awesome party (Laser Tag), and the boys LOVED the Minecraft theme.

Long Time No See

I have been AWOL for the past month.  Family shenanigans have kept me busy.  I need to reclaim my life and enjoy the simple things again.  I love the picture below.  The hanging planter reminds me of the 1970s macrame hangers.  It also would solve the problem of indoor kitties munching on house plants.

Fairy House

It appears that the Michigan Renaissance Festival had a Fairy House Contest. Why didn't I hear about this sooner?!? Here are a few of the most "liked" houses from the Festival's Facebook page.

Fairy House 102

Fairy House 2

Fairy House 3
They had over 150 submissions! I am thinking maybe I will submit next year. I am trying to figure out what design I would want to make, and I kept imagining the Burrow from Harry Potter, so I googled the Burrow. This amazing creation popped up. It's gingerbread. GINGERBREAD!!! Amazing!

This is from Craftster, I didn't find the original contest, but I sure hope mezcraft won, holy crow!

First Day of Fifth Grade!

Ack! M has started his first day of fifth grade! Miss L thought she should dress the part even though she doesn't started preschool until next week. Where does the time go?

Pinterest Challenge: The Results

On Thursday I posted a challenge to myself, complete 5 Pinterest projects with stuff I already own. Here are the results!

1. The Basket Weave Card. I decided to combine 2 projects, the basket weave from scraps and a 3-D paper butterfly project I wanted to do a while back. This is what I came up with:
I am unsure if I completely like it. Mike wasn't sure about the brown background. I may modify, I can't decide.

2.The finished Fairy Garden. I transplanted the overgrown Impatiens (which means I probably killed them), and added the lovely fairy furniture I purchased from Fox Specialty Services (Mr. Fox himself included a hand written thank you note, so cute!).
Before
After!
3. Break in 3 pairs of flats with chunky socks and a hair dryer. Well, I don't have a photo for this, my results were somewhat mixed. It's not an easy process. The shoes were uncomfortable to begin with, so stuffing them onto my feet along with a pair of ridiculously ugly polar fleece socks, then blow drying them till my feet sweat was a painful process. They are still tight. I will attempt a second stretch, but I am not sold on this process.

4. Button Lampshade. I did not get to this project, we went to the Zoo instead. But I did make Corn Bread Corn Dogs from Happy Good Time Blog, except they had a fabulous looking home-made corn bread recipe and I used Jiffy. And I made big muffins, not minis.

5. Martha's Muffin Pan Potatoes Gratin. Mine did not look nearly as pretty as Martha's, but hey, they tasted good! I did not pair them with steak, chicken, or sauteed fish, we had them with Sloppy Joe's. We weren't very fancy pants tonight.

And voila! I did it, sort of. Five more things I can cross off Pinterest as having completed!

Pinterest Challenge

Well folks, summer is winding down. I haven't been as crafty these past couple of weeks, so I am going to try and challenge myself this weekend. I am going to try and complete 5 Pinterest projects using only what I have already at home. These will include recipes as well, since I haven't done a Mommy Made it Monday in forever. Here are the five contenders:

1. The Basket Weave Card from Get It Scrapped. I have a bunch of strips from what I have completed of Miss L's baby book, let's see what I can do!

2.Complete my fairy garden a la Good Life of Design. I bought all the extras to complete my Fairy Garden, but my impatiens were, well, impatient.

3. Break in the 3 pairs of flats I have never worn because they are too snug as suggested by coffee, light & sweet.

4. Button up a lampshade. This had no link, so maybe this was someone's actual lampshade?

5. And finally, Muffin-Pan Potato Gratin courtesy of Martha Stewart. Mike bought a 10lb bag of potatoes because he couldn't find the 5lb bag, then went on a no potato diet. Huh. This is not the picture on Martha's site, so whoever took it, my apologies, someone doesn't know how to use Pinterest correctly.

Well, I will post my versions of these lovelies by no later than Monday, should I be successful. If not, I will tell you my tale of woe as to why they are not complete....(the cat ate my homework....aliens stole my potatoes for fuel....etc). Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Diner en Blanc

I am obviously late to the party, 24 years to be exact.  Apparently in 1988, one hundred friends met at a flash picnic in Paris.  They wore all white so they could find each other easily.  Fast forward to today and the guest list is in the thousands and The White Dinner is held in cities all over the world.  People sign up online to be put on the wait list.  They don't know the location of the dinner until the day of.  They bring in all their own food, wine, tables, linens and chairs.  They have to leave the site just as they found it.  People have to be as elegant as possible.  They wear gowns and serve 5 course dinners with candelabras.  Guess what? there is going to be a dinner in Chicago on August 24!!  Go here for the link to sign up.  I think this is so amazing.

You Really Can Find Anything on the Internet!

I have been cleaning out the boxes in my garage while watching crappy movies on TV all day.  I decided to cruise some sweet sites on line and lo and behold I found this picture.  Amber has a fondness for all things Star Wars aannd hedgehogs.  What are the chances of finding both in one picture?  The only thing that would make it perfect is if it had a cat in it.  Check it out at The Wary Meyers Decorative Arts.

Baby Legs

So a while ago (a long while ago), I bought some socks to make Baby Legs. I can't find the Pin now that gave me the idea, but I like Cut Out & Keep's version better. The next pair I make will be using their tutorial. For this pair I just cut off and zig-zagged the bottom, I like how their's has a cuff.

I know, the blue doesn't quite coordinate with pink plaid...

Clearly it was snack time.

This is what I get when I say "Smile!". M is looking sharp, and Miss L looks...scared?

Busy Bee

So I have been a busy little bee! Mom pinned this adorable reversible "high-low" skirt from Thumbeline, aka the bodebo reversible skirt

I loved the design, I loved the fabric, what I didn't love was the price tag, $118. Did I mention I quit my job in April? That the Divine Miss L likes to hand me squishy, squirmy bugs regularly? That she must stomp in every puddle she sees? While absolutely angelic looking, Miss L is no angel and I would have heart failure should she own anything that costs more than what I wear. Enter Joann's summer seersucker fabric and voila, my own reversible high-low skirt.

My top ruffle isn't as generous as the original, I figured Miss L's shirt was going to cover it.

Still can't get her to pose. She just wants to watch herself dance in M's mirror.

More dancing, and yes, I am washing M's bed skirt, ignore the frightening teal box springs.

Featured Quilting Blog

It appears that Amber is busy creating and I am busy collecting ideas.  All People Quilt is a great source for free and beautiful quilt patterns.  I love the color combos in these bright and cheerful quilts.  I especially like the colorful border on the one below.

This quilt is made from fat quarters for a twin bed.

Here is a tricky one that is appliqued.  This one is beautiful but looks really hard.

Here is a Bubble Gum Pink quilt made from fat eighths.

Pillowcase Dress

Another craft done! My first attempt at a pillowcase dress like the ones all over Pinterest, not too shabby! I might widen the armholes a smidge, I haven't reinforced them yet for that very purpose. When Michael saw the dress he asked when I bought it. I told him I made it to which he replied, "Are you sure you didn't buy that?" I guess this means I passed the 9 yr old boy test :)

She would not smile for me....

In these last two she is pretending to be the tooth fairy.
And this last pic is the beauties I found in storage when cleaning out my childhood. A Popple, 2 Pound Puppies, 2 Pound Purries, and Kerry Inez, my beloved Cabbage Patch Kid. There was a CBK pony, however Miss L didn't want him photographed.
